NEWS RELEASE

Norwich students raise almost $8k for employee in cancer treatment

NORTHFIELD –
On Tuesday, March 9, Norwich University students presented dining hall employee Rosemary Sprague with a check totaling just under $8,000. This was not to cover an outstanding debt for an overcharged meal card but rather an act of love for someone the students see every day as they enter the dining hall to eat.

Sprague, of Northfield, is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer, and the fundraiser was meant to help her through this time of added medical expenses.

“They just wanted me to feel better,” she said. “I love them. I didn’t realize how much they really cared about me until this situation the other day.”

In her eighth year working in the dining hall, Sprague mans the counter where students swipe their meal cards. But anyone who has ever dined in the Wise Campus Center knows she is more than just an employee.

“We wanted to do this for Rosemary because she is part of the Norwich Family and has brought joy into so many lives with her beautiful personality and encouragement,” said Alison Lanz, the regimental commander of the Corps of Cadets and the student behind the fundraiser. “She is always complimenting us. It is the least that we could do for her.”
The idea to raise money to help Sprague through her treatment came from the Corps of Cadets, who paid $10 each to wear civilian clothes on Monday.

Upon learning of the fundraiser, civilian students joined the effort raising almost $400. They made pink breast cancer awareness pins, to which they added blue (Sprague’s favorite color) and sold 215 of them. Some students paid $10-$20 for a pin selling for $1.

“Everyone loves Rosemary,” said Jessica Henderson, senior resident coordinator. “And so when told they had the opportunity to donate some money to support her, they jumped at the chance.”

NEWS RELEASE

Norwich to hold 15th annual military writers’ symposium

NORTHFIELD, Vt. (March 1, 2010)
– Norwich University will hold its 15th annual Colby Military Writers’ Symposium on Thursday, March 4 and Friday, March 5 with five authors engaged in presentations and a panel discussion.

The theme for this year’s symposium is: America at the Crossroads: The Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have consumed a combined 15 years, with no clear resolution. While the situation in Iraq has greatly improved, the future of Afghanistan and the problems of Pakistan provide only uncertainty and controversy. President Obama’s recent announcement that 30,000 additional troops are being sent to Afghanistan signals an even deeper American commitment. Our mission and role in Afghanistan and the lessons of Vietnam and Iraq are among the important issues that will be discussed at the 2010 Colby Symposium.

Highlights of the event include a panel discussion with the authors on Thursday at 1 p.m. in Plumley Armory. And on Friday at 2 p.m. in Dole Auditorium the military veterans’ communications seminar will present a screening of “The War at Home,” http://bit.ly/WarAtHome a student-produced documentary film made up of interviews with veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

A full schedule of events and author biographies can be accessed here: http://bit.ly/NUColby

Founded in 1996 by Carlo D´Este, W.E.B Griffin, and Ambassador William E. Colby, and renamed in the latter’s memory in 1997, the Colby Symposium has brought more than 50 top authors, historians, and filmmakers to Norwich University in Northfield, Vt., for a two-day residency to participate in open forums, lectures and other related functions.

Norwich Women’s hockey team raises over $1,000 for breast cancer research

NORTHFIELD –
The Norwich University Women’s Ice Hockey team raised $1,124 at their Jan. 29 home game against St. Michael’s College to be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for The Cure.

The Susan G. Komen Foundation for The Cure, the global leader of the breast cancer movement, has invested nearly $1.5 billion in breast cancer research since inception in 1982. As the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists, the organization is working together to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures.

“A big thank you goes out to everyone involved,” said Sophie Leclerc, the team captain, citing fans, parents and her teammates. “To get that kind of support is great.”

The team raised money initially to purchase the pink jerseys they wore for the game. And a handmade quilt was raffled off with proceeds from that going to the night’s events. Lisa Del Dotto was the raffle winner.

Carol Stevens and Gail Mariano dropped the honorary first puck in front of a crowd of over 500, many of whom were dressed in pink.

The Cadets, who are in just their third season competing at the varsity level, were 8-1-1 overall and 7-1-1 in the ECAC East going into Friday’s game. They added another win to their stats Friday, beating St. Mike’s 6-0, keeping them at the top of the ECAC East standings.

Norwich will return to action on Friday, Feb. 5, when the Cadets travel to Newport, R.I., to face ECAC East rival Salve Regina at 7 p.m.

NEWS RELEASE

Norwich closes most successful campaign ever

NORTHFIELD, Vt. (Jan. 18, 2010) – Norwich University officials announced the end to the Norwich Forever! fundraising campaign, which closed at the end of December with alumni and friends making a record investment in the future of Norwich students.

Norwich received more than $81.9 million in campaign gifts and pledges, nearly $27 million beyond the original goal for the campaign, successfully ending the campaign one year early.

“That we achieved such success in only four years, with the final sixteen months in a global recession, is a testament to how much our alumni cherish Norwich and want to provide our students with a first-rate experience,” said President Richard W. Schneider. “Many friends in Vermont, including several businesses, also participated in the campaign, and we are honored to have their support.”

Through the Norwich Forever! campaign the university has invested $10 million in academic programming and $9.5 million in scholarship funds. The campaign also provided funding for three new buildings on campus: the Wise Campus Center, the Sullivan Museum and History Center, and Doyle Hall, an addition to the athletic complex currently under construction.

“This is the most successful campaign in our university’s 190-year history, and it has put us in a very strong position as we approach the beginning of our third century of service. In an increasingly competitive higher education marketplace, this campaign has allowed us to grow our undergraduate population to more than 2,000 and to provide students with excellent facilities,” Schneider said.

The campaign has also allowed for more students than ever before to travel abroad and work with faculty members on research projects.

“On behalf of the faculty, staff, and students of Norwich, I want to thank everyone who gave to Norwich during this campaign.”

Norwich University launched the Norwich Forever! campaign in 2005 with a goal to raise $55 million in five years. Due to the volume of gifts and pledges, the university’s Board of Trustees decided to end Norwich Forever! one year earlier than originally planned. Norwich has now begun a smaller, three-year fundraising effort with a limited number of priorities.
