Norwich raises over $68k towards scholarship in alum and Navy SEAL Brian Bill’s name

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The inaugural golf tournament fundraiser held on June 14 at the Sterling Farms Golf Course in Stamford, Conn., as a memorial to NU alum Brian R. Bill’01, raised a net amount of $68,757, all of which will go to the Norwich scholarship created in Bill’s name.

Chief Special Warfare Operator (SEAL) Brian Bill was born on August 23, 1979 in Stamford, Conn. and graduated from Norwich University in 2001. He was a highly decorated combat veteran with numerous awards and commendations.  On August 6, 2011, a Chinook helicopter, call sign Extortion 17, was shot down by enemy fire in Afghanistan taking the lives of 38 people on board. Brian was one of 17 SEALs aboard that helicopter. This tournament was established to celebrate his life and generate financial support for the scholarship established in his name at Norwich University.

The golf tournament included 110 players and over 200 people at the lunch.  Dozens of individuals donated to the auctions and raffles, and the event received wonderful community support from the CT National Guard, Freedom Riders, NU Color Guard and other organizations. Special guests included NHL great Jeremy Roenick and former NHL player and referee Paul Stewart, who was the MC for the day.

The featured luncheon speaker was New York Times best-selling author Eric Blehm.  His luncheon presentation focused on “Fearless,” his newest book which takes readers deep into SEAL Team SIX and straight to the heart of one of its most legendary operators, Navy SEAL Adam Brown. Blehm had the rare opportunity to interview Adam’s teammates in preparation for this book. In the days following the mission in which Osama bin Laden was killed, he made his way around the country to talk with the men who wanted Adam’s story told. Brian Bill was among those interviewed. Blehm was the last journalist to interview Brian.

The Brian R. Bill Memorial Scholarship, which is endowed at Norwich and will be awarded for the first time in the coming academic year, was specifically created to benefit the sons and daughters of US Navy SEALs or those who have served in the US Armed Forces Special Forces.

“Brian Bill was passionate about the SEALs, and the scholarship created in his honor will be a great benefit to many in that extraordinary community,” said President Richard Schneider.

Norwich University receives over $250k in donated equipment from LeCroy Corporation, spurs class giving

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Norwich University officials announced that LeCroy Corporation has generously donated $267,000 of advanced test and measurement equipment to the Electrical Engineering (EE) department.

The gift was made in honor of Associate Director of Sports Information Charlie Crosby, 1963 alum and former LeCroy employee and his wife, Carole. As such the donation will launch the Class of 1963’s 50th reunion gift leading up to that class’ induction into the “Old Guard” at Homecoming 2013.
LeCroy, located in Chestnut Ridge, NY, is a worldwide leader in providing oscilloscopes, protocol analyzers and measurement solutions that enable companies across a wide range of industries to design and test electronic devices of all types.

The new equipment will replace the department’s current machines and place Norwich as a partner for student projects with other schools, elevating the capability of the university to a leader in the field of EE technology.

Recently Norwich President Richard Schneider and department leaders recognized at a dinner LeCroy President Tom Reslewic for his generosity, followed the next day by training on the equipment for professors and students.

“Norwich is one of the oldest engineering schools in America,” Schneider said. “This is a huge investment the LeCroy Corporation is making in Norwich University, and we appreciate it. This gift will help [our students] to become even better engineers.”

At the dinner Reslewic remarked: “Smart people with good leaders – like you all here – have to produce, design and develop things. That’s the value system of LeCroy and of Norwich University, and because of that I am really pleased to be involved with you.”

Norwich University announces renewal of $133k nursing grant

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Officials at Norwich University’s College of Graduate and Continuing Studies (CGCS) announced the renewal of a grant that will support students in the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program.

The National Faculty Loan Repayment Program will provide over $133,000 towards repayment of student loans to those graduates that go into teaching upon graduation.

"Our master’s degree in Nursing Education is a fully accredited and highly respected program both nationally and for the state of Vermont. This grant will open the door to nurses so that they can obtain a master’s degree in the nursing education field at reduced cost to themselves and of great benefit to their community and state,” said CGCS Associate Dean of Academic Programs Hal Kearsley. “This loan system would allow potential students, who might see the funding for their master’s degree out of reach, the ability to obtain that education. We at Norwich are very pleased to be able to offer this opportunity."

“This is of great benefit to the graduate students in nursing education in Vermont to have this financial benefit to support their education,” said Director of Nursing Valerie McCarthy. “Norwich University is delighted this resource is available for students because it can help to fill the need for clinical nurse educators in the state.”

CGCS’s MSN is an online program that offers two concentrations – nursing administration and nursing education – and is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
