NEWS RELEASE

NORTHFIELD, Vt. –
Norwich University officials announced it has been named one of eight colleges by the US Department of Defense Cybercrime Center (DC3) as a pilot university of the Center of Digital Forensic Academic Excellence (CDFAE) program.

The program is designed to partner academia with government in an effort to establish industry standards for digital forensic education.

“This designation spotlights Norwich as the home of one of the top cyber forensics academic programs in the United States, and, perhaps, in the world,” said Dr. Peter Stephenson, an associate professor in the information assurance program and director of the Norwich University center for Advanced Computing and Digital Forensics, where activities related to the designations are carried out.

“Our sophisticated virtual computing systems that support information security and digital forensics labs and research are a model for other colleges and universities. They will add materially to our already advanced courses in both disciplines,” he said.

Norwich offers a Bachelor of Science in Computer Security and Information Assurance (BSCSIA) with concentrations in cyber forensics and advanced information assurance.

This academic excellence pilot program is designed to validate the criteria before other schools apply for the designation.

“CDFAE is a team sport where everybody wins: The college and university partners win through sharpened curricula that becomes a differentiator for the schools and their students; industry wins in receiving smart grads with turnkey knowledge and skills; and beyond that, government wins as CDFAE helps deepen our national bench in scarce skills to support law enforcement and national security requirements,” said DC3 Executive Director Steven Shirley. “CDFAE creates an optimal outcome for all partners.”

The other seven colleges in the pilot program are: Anne Arundel Community College; Howard County Community College; Oklahoma State University; Utica College; Stevenson; Johns Hopkins University and Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT).

Norwich was named a Center of Excellence in information assurance education by the US National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security in 2001.

Norwich is one of only four four-year institutions in the US to hold Center of Excellence designations in Digital Forensics and Information Assurance. Each standard meets separate goals and requirements, but coalesce with the Norwich motto "Expect Challenge. Achieve Distinction."

NORTHFIELD, Vt. –
Norwich University will host political and free computer software activist Richard Stallman for a presentation titled “Copyright versus Community in the Age of Computer Networks,” on Wednesday, Nov. 16 from 4-6 p.m. in Dole Auditorium.

This event is free and open to the public.

Stallman, a computer programmer, launched the GNU Project in 1983 to create a free Unix-like computer operating system, initiating the free software movement. He is its lead architect and organizer. In 1985 he founded the Free Software Foundation, and in 1989 he co-founded the League for Programming Freedom.

Stallman is known for developing several pieces of widely used free software and is the main author of the most widely used free software license – the GNU General Public License.

His talk will focus on the need to reform copyright laws in order to promote progress for the benefit of the public.

“Richard Stallman has been at the forefront of one of the most important movements in the field of computing, and I consider it an honor to hear what he thinks our students, both technical and nontechnical, can do to help improve the copyright system in the United States,” said Jeremy Hansen, assistant professor of computer science. “I am also interested in hearing about how the recent US patent legislation and cloud computing affect how we look at today’s copyright system.”

NEWS RELEASE

NORTHFIELD, Vt. –
Research conducted at Norwich University by students and faculty members will be featured in a Vermont Public Television documentary airing tonight at 8 p.m.

Norwich faculty members Danner Friend and Jacques Beneat will be featured in "Emerging Science: Out Of This World," which explores the construction of a miniature cube satellite that is being built by a partnership of professors and students from Norwich University, University of Vermont, St. Michael's College, and Vermont Technical College.

The project, which has the ultimate goal of sending a self-propelled, triple-length CubeSat to the moon in five years, is funded largely from a grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration [NASA]. The money was funneled through the Vermont Space Grant Consortium, one of many academic groups that NASA has encouraged to promote aerospace research.

The CubeSat project has been broken down into three aspects so student teams at each school will have a distinct research goal. The UVM team is mapping out the best possible flight paths to the moon; VTC students will be assembling the CubeSat, itself, including propulsion components; and the Norwich researchers are working on the hardware and software for the satellite’s navigation system.

“This is an exciting opportunity to participate in space exploration and science missions, and we look forward to continuing and building upon that.” said Prof. Danner Friend.

NORTHFIELD, Vt. –
Norwich University’s Office of Substance Abuse Education and Prevention, in conjunction with several community partners, will hold an annual alcohol awareness event this Wednesday, Oct. 26, from 7-10 p.m. in the Mill in recognition of October as Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Month.

Tables will be set up with free food, door prizes and a short quiz that enters participants in a drawing for two televisions. The quiz focuses on campus resources, such as Safe Rides, a program designed to reduce drinking and driving.

This is the fourth year in a row this event is being held, and last year approximately 350 students participated.

“We do this every year, twice a year, to make sure students have this information about how to get help whether they’re in a crisis or they need longer term education and treatment,” said Gail Mears, director of the Office of Substance Abuse Education and Prevention.

This event is of particular significance this year given the recent tragic car accident in which alcohol is cited as a factor in the death of one student and critical injuries of three others.

The Mill is located in the bottom of Wise Campus Center.

NEWS RELEASE

NORTHFIELD, Vt. –
Norwich University officials announced they have joined Efficiency Vermont’s Energy Leadership Challenge, which establishes a goal of reducing energy consumption by 7.5% on the campus over the next two years.

Partnering with Efficiency Vermont and SourceOne, an energy management and consulting services firm out of Boston, Norwich’s campus will undergo a thorough energy audit beginning in late September. The audit will evaluate the use of energy at all levels on campus from the central heating plant to lighting, and it is slated to take several months to complete.

According to SourceOne, a subsidiary of Veolia Energy North America, the campus can reduce its energy use by about 5% per year, saving a minimum of 400,000 kilowatt hours annually—roughly the amount of electricity consumed by more than 44 average Vermont homes (Vermont Department of Public Service figures). With the efforts from SourceOne and other energy saving measures, this puts the challenge goal of 7.5% within reach by 2013.

“The energy conservation measures to be identified by SourceOne and implemented by Norwich will take our long tradition of seeking operating efficiencies to a new level,” said Chief Administrative Officer Dave Magida. “Norwich already has a very energy efficient campus, but with the assistance of Efficiency Vermont and SourceOne, we are looking forward to meeting the goal of the Energy Leadership Challenge.”

“We are very pleased to partner with Norwich University to identify solutions to help reduce energy consumption on campus,” said Vincent Martin, President of SourceOne. “At SourceOne, we share Norwich’s commitment to energy efficiency, and we applaud their efforts to implement measures that will enable the University to operate their facilities in an even more cost-effective, efficient and environmentally-responsible manner.”

The Energy Leadership Challenge is an invitation to the largest businesses and institutions in Vermont to take action to achieve a 7.5% energy savings at their facilities over the challenge’s two-year timeframe – July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2013. The program is geared to the largest 300 or so commercial energy users in Vermont, as well as commercial energy users in Burlington Electric Department territory.

“Norwich’s leadership is exemplary," said Tim Perrin, Efficiency Vermont account manager. "By setting an energy reduction goal and developing a comprehensive plan to achieve it through this partnership, their investments will improve the operation of buildings and tackle deferred maintenance items, while achieving a rate of return that rivals historical endowment performance.”

NEWS RELEASE

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Norwich University will host Democratic Political Consultant and CNN Contributor James Carville and Republican Political Consultant and CNN Contributor Mary Matalin in a look at today's most important political issues as well as a behind-the-scenes look at politics inside Washington and how today's headlines are playing out around the country on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. in Plumley Armory.

This event is part of the annual Todd Lecture Series.

Carville is the unbowed liberal and former co-host of Crossfire, while conservative Matalin most recently served as both counselor to the vice president and assistant to President George W. Bush.

Matalin and Carville are key players on the national political stage; between them they have over 25 years of experience working for every president over the last three decades.

Matalin served as President George Bush's campaign manager in 1992, while her then soon-to-be husband, Carville, was President Bill Clinton's campaign manager.

Now they share their political opinions and affiliations—which haven't merged despite matrimony—with audiences everywhere and provide a stimulating, candid and provocative analysis of today's hot-button political issues from both sides of the political aisle.

Carville and Matalin are the authors of the national best seller, All's Fair: Love, War, and Running for President.

The discussion will be moderated by Associate Professor of Political Science Jason Jagemann.

This event is free and open to the public; however tickets are required for entry. To reserve tickets please call 802-485-2633 or email toddlectureseries@norwich.edu.

The event can also be watched live online at www.nsnsports.net/norwich.

The Todd Lecture Series is named in honor of US Army retired Maj. Gen. and Norwich President Emeritus W. Russell Todd, ‘50, and his wife, Carol, in gratitude for their dedicated service to the University. With this series, Norwich reaches out to bring important, significant lecturers to campus.

“These grants provide assistance to the MSN students who receive the direct benefit of financial support to help defray some of their educational costs,” said Director of Nursing Valerie McCarthy. “Norwich University is delighted this resource is available for students.”

The Advanced Education Nurse Traineeship award is a continuation of last year’s grant and provides $20,000 for a needs-based graduate student stipend. Last year this grant supported 13 students in the MSN program.

The National Faculty Loan Repayment Program will provide $153,000 towards repayment of student loans to those graduates that go into teaching upon graduation.

These federal nursing awards address the country’s need for a steady supply of qualified nurse leaders, according Rod Hicks, Ph.D, RN, director of the MSN Program.

“I am proud of our MSN students’ accomplishments and the role Norwich University has played in helping them to assume positions of leadership in federal, military, and civilian health settings,” he said.

SGCS’s MSN is an online program that offers two concentrations – nursing administration and nursing education – and is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

NEWS RELEASE

NORTHFIELD, Vt. –
Norwich University officials announced that engineering students placed first in the region and fourth overall in the 2011 international PCI Engineering Student Design Competition, also known as the Big Beam Contest.

Norwich University is the smallest institution in the competition to win in its zone, which includes all the eastern states from Virginia to Maine. The other zone winners have an average of 29,000 students (ranging from 16,000-51,000) compared to 2,100 at Norwich. In addition, this is only the second year that Norwich has participated in this competition.

Previous winners in this zone include VPI, West Point, Clarkson University, U-Mass Amherst, Tufts, Virginia Tech, Lehigh University and Pennsylvania State University.

Organized by PCI's Student Education Committee, and sponsored by Sika Corp., the Big Beam Contest entails the design, fabrication and testing of precast, prestressed concrete beams by student teams under the guidance of local PCI producer members.

Prizes are awarded for most efficient design, highest load capacity, and best report, among multiple categories. First place winners of the zone competitions move on to the international competition to be judged against one another to determine the overall champion.

“This competition tests students’ ability to create innovative, but economical, designs,” said Schmeckpeper, the Norwich team’s faculty advisor.

“Since the students fabricate their own beam, starting with the formwork, they learn about all the practical requirements for good design. Finally, when the students test their beam, they get a chance to compare their calculations to the actual strength of the beam, and observe the behavior of the beam in a real life situation. “

The Norwich University Big Beam team will receive $1,250 for its efforts.

The Norwich University Big Beam team consisted of these students: Daniel Gosselin, Nicola Suren, Logan Bessette, Austin Brochetti, and Seth Knihtila. Adam Sevi and Edwin Schmeckpeper served as the faculty advisors for the Norwich University students involved in the contest.

Joe Carrara and Benjamin Cota of J.P. Carrara & Sons of Middlebury, Vt. provided guidance and material support to the team.

NEWS RELEASE

NORTHFIELD, Vt. –
Norwich University officials announced it has received a grant to support 28 part-time AmeriCorps community service positions for the 2011-2012 academic year.

The grant from Vermont Campus Compact, Washington Campus Compact and the Corporation for National and Community Service will be used to support the recruitment of college students to volunteer in their communities, helping to increase the capacity of local nonprofit agencies and schools and meeting critical community-defined needs.

The AmeriCorps Students in Service (SIS) program currently operates in 20 states across the country. Overall, 3,775 college students will participate in the program this year, and will contribute approximately 1.5 million hours of service to their local communities.

To date, Norwich University boasts the largest SIS team in the state and one of the largest in the Northeast.

Through SIS college student volunteers in Vermont will be eligible to earn $1,175 upon successful completion of 300 hours of service. This year’s program will engage at least 50 Students in Service members in tutoring, mentoring, coaching, providing services to disadvantaged youth and hosting service projects related to the environment and human services.

The Norwich SIS team is comprised of both civilian and Corps of Cadet students representing a range of academic majors, hometowns across the country and many areas of service-related interests from international and domestic sex-trafficking prevention to youth mentoring to providing services for senior citizens, US veterans and local residents.

Team members were selected carefully based on past demonstration of volunteer work, leadership skills, academic performance and anticipated service work plans since the number of applications exceeded the number of positions available.

“The Students in Service program provides opportunities for currently enrolled students to serve their communities while earning tuition assistance,” said Cheryl Whitney Lower, executive director of Vermont Campus Compact.

“This program is especially beneficial in these challenging times, allowing community organizations and their partnering campuses to meet more needs, and helping students and their families with the cost of higher education.”

In addition to Norwich, campuses that were awarded AmeriCorps positions from Vermont Campus Compact for the 2011-2012 year include: Bennington College, Castleton State College, Johnson State College, Lyndon State College, Middlebury College, Saint Michael's College, Southern Vermont College and the University of Vermont. Participating students on these campuses will contribute more than 15,000 hours of service to nonprofit organizations across the state. Collectively, they will receive more than $58,000 in education awards.

NEWS RELEASE

NORTHFIELD, Vt. –
Norwich University’s student-produced documentary film, "The War at Home," has taken National First Place in the Society of Professional Journalists' 2010 "Mark of Excellence Awards in the category of Television In-Depth Reporting."

Norwich was awarded First Place in Region 1 on April 9 at Brown University and then went on to compete against the other 11 Regional Winners.

The awards will be presented on September 25 at the Society of Professional Journalists' 2011 National Convention in New Orleans.

“The War at Home” explores issues veterans face upon returning home in interviews with veterans of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Most of those interviewed on camera are Norwich student veterans, which gives viewers the opportunity to witness what would otherwise be a private conversation.

Produced at the nation’s oldest private military college, many of the student producers went on to take commissions in the US military. One of the Senior Producers, Amanda Plachek, is currently serving in Afghanistan.

The goal of the documentary is to educate those deploying, their families and the general public about the realities of war and the effect it can have on those who serve.

“Family members, students and classmates say it is such a powerful video because getting exposed to these stories gives viewers a view of the military you don’t usually see,” said Brittney Schlauch, a Senior Producer.

Two current seniors, Jordan Lewis and Matt Hernandez, used the film as a catalyst for conversations with their parents in considering signing an Army contract. They are both graduating and commissioning in ceremonies at Norwich this weekend.

“‘The War at Home’ was a valuable experience for those on both sides of the camera,” said William Estill, communications professor. For some veterans, the on-camera interview was the first time they talked openly of certain wartime events.

“The national award comes at a time when The War on Terror reaches a milestone with the death of bin Laden, and the student veterans and producers are graduating and commissioning,” Estill said.

NEWS RELEASE

NORTHFIELD, Vt. –
On Thursday, April 21, Professor Peter Stephenson was formally voted into the Vidocq Society, a group of retired law enforcement professionals dedicated to solving ‘cold cases’ of murder, as a Special Member.

Stephenson is the only cyber forensics specialist currently a member of this exclusive group.

The Vidocq Society meets monthly in Philadelphia to donate time and expertise to solving cases officially brought to them. They are named for Eugène François Vidocq, the 18th century French detective who founded the Sûreté. They apply their collective forensic, investigative and legal skills and experience to ‘cold case’ homicides and unsolved deaths.

Practicing a new application of cyber forensics to solve crimes, Stephenson has applied a method of crime assessment criminal profiling drawn from the work of Richard Walter and Robert Keppel to use a suspect’s computer as a means for understanding valuable information about the individual’s personal life and his or her involvement in the crime being investigated.

“My acceptance by the Society represents a high point in my career and personal life,” Stephenson said. “Over the years my profession has been good to me and this is my opportunity to give back. Besides, what more could a forensic scientist wish for than to be accepted by a group comprised of the premier practitioners of forensics and criminal investigation world-wide?”

The Vidocq Society has been assisting law enforcement with cases, helping to solve many, for the past 21 years.

NEWS RELEASE

NORTHFIELD, Vt. –
Nine Norwich University students have spearheaded a major polio awareness event to be held in Montpelier on Tuesday, April 12, from 7-9 p.m. at the Capitol Plaza.

On that night Ramesh Ferris will present his story of surviving polio as part of his Cycle to Walk initiative.

“Polio still exists in four countries: Pakistan, Afghanistan, India and Nigeria, and while it still exists anywhere, it’s a threat to everyone, everywhere,” said Nicole DiDomenico, director of the Center for Civic Engagement.

The event, “Pushing Out Polio: An Evening with Survivor Ramesh Ferris,” was organized by NU Rotaract Club members led by NU junior and Rotaract President Ally Manousos whose fundraising goal is $20,000.

“I didn’t know much about polio at all or that it is a disease that is present now,” she said. “But his whole message is so inspiring; I learned about how easy it is to make a difference with this issue.”

Manousos, a born leader in service, will receive a “Commitment to Service Award” tonight in Montpelier from the Vermont Campus Compact.

“I’ve worked with Ally since she was a freshman, and even that early on, I knew she was going to do great things for Norwich, for the community and for any cause she saw as a worthwhile pursuit,” DiDomenico said. “She has led two teams to Thailand through NU VISIONS Abroad, served as a DREAM youth mentor for at-risk children in Barre, serves as a trained Sexual Assault Crisis Advocate and tutors kids weekly in math and science. She represents exactly what we hope to develop here at NU - leaders with a conscience, who are well-respected and trusted by their peers and who get things done.”

Through Manousos' efforts NU Rotaract (university) organized seven Rotary (business) clubs – Northfield; Barre; Central Vermont; Randolph; Waterbury; Montpelier and Lebanon-Riverside – around the “Pushing out Polio” event.

Tickets cost $20 per person and $35 per couple. Contact Nicole at 279-2371 or ndidomen@yahoo.com.

Other events to raise awareness of this issue included a collage contest; a free showing of “The Final Inch,” a documentary film about the current status of polio eradication efforts worldwide, and visits to Norwich by Ferris for the Norwich community.

NEWS RELEASE

NORTHFIELD, Vt. –
Norwich University’s Sullivan Museum and History Center (SMHC) will celebrate the opening of the special exhibit, “Touch the Sound,” on Wednesday, April 6 at 12 p.m. with bagpipers for entertainment and a light lunch snack.

This event is free and open to the public.

The exhibit includes such explorations of sound as an ear model from the Department of Biology to three paintings from the art department demonstrating visual rhythm.

The Engineering Department shares three displays including how they use music as the motivating backdrop for teaching students the proper use of machine shop tools and computer programming skills.

Visitors are invited to play a “student flute,” strum a violin or a mandolin, and hear guitar compositions. WNUB, the NU radio station 88.3, shares clips and promos and sweepers from over the decades while the History Department presents music of the Civil Rights and how it impacted mass meetings.

The SMHC shares some of its special “sound” objects including the Estey Organ, the World War Field Phonograph, and the original carillon (c. 1934) without the bells which now resides in the Museum. Hands-on fun is also included in a “horrific sound” activity that is not to be missed—explore what horrible sounds—like fingernails on the chalkboard—concern most Americans!
For more information please call the Sullivan Museum at 802-485-2183, 2379 or 2448. The Museum is free and open to the public from 9-4 pm Monday through Saturday.

This special exhibit is on display April 6 through August 30, 2011.

Two Lunch and Learn programs are associated with the exhibit:

Thursday, April 14: Amp it Up: Getting Musical Vibration Into the Sound System with NU Engineering Professor Michael Prairie presenting how vibrations are turned into electrical signals.

Tuesday, April 19: Sing and Be Free: Using Song to Invoke God, Forge Unity, and Change History during the Civil Rights Movement, 1960-65: presented by NU History Professor Rowland Brucken.
