Alumni plan activities across the country in annual Norwich National Day of Service

NEWS RELEASE

NORTHFIELD, Vt. –
Norwich University alumni across the country will be volunteering in their local communities in the third annual Norwich National Day of Service on or around Saturday, Nov. 5.

Last year over 250 alumni participated in these events, which range from work at food shelves; veterans’ support; environmental projects; collecting soldier care package items; clean up of public areas including cleaning and clearing hiking trails in Vermont.

Here is what alumni will be doing this year:

Hudson Valley (NY): Care package drive for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan
Worcester, MA: Cleaning Worcester Korean War Memorial
Boston, MA and the North Shore: Toy drive for military families
Naples, FL: Cleaning Cambier Park Veterans Memorial
Central Florida: Toys for Tots drive
Fort Meade, MD: Packing boxes of food for military families in need at the Fort Meade USO food pantry
Manchester and Nashua, NH: Serving lunch at the local soup kitchen and sorting and preparing Thanksgiving food boxes for families in need
San Antonio, TX: Habitat for Humanity warehouse to cleaning and furniture assembly, etc. Also Operation Snowbird—donating turkeys to the San Antonio food bank
Pittsburgh, PA: Cleaning the National Veteran’s Cemetery of the Alleghenies
Connecticut: Packing care packages for troops at the annual Give2theTroop Day
Colorado Springs, CO: Toy collection for children of military families at the Air Force vs. Army game
Northern NJ: Holiday care packages to wounded warriors at the Bethesda Naval Hospital and veterans living at the NJ Veteran’s Memorial Home
Central Vermont: Corps and civilian students will have their choice of Random Acts of Raking, Door-to-Door Food Drive, flood clean-up in homes, or neighborhood and riverbank clean-up
Riverside, CA: Rob Soltes ’90 Memorial Golf Tournament to benefit Blinded Veterans Association
Chicago, IL: Fall cleaning at the Fisher House, a temporary housing unit for wounded warriors and their families
Philadelphia, PA: Holiday party with residents of the Veterans Community Living Center

“From putting together Thanksgiving food boxes for hungry families to cleaning up war memorials in Worcester, Mass. and Naples, Fla. in time for Veterans Day, the Norwich Day of Service is truly an example of putting our guiding value of ‘service before self’ into action in a really meaningful and special way.”


