Norwich Women’s hockey team raises over $1,000 for breast cancer research
NORTHFIELD – The Norwich University Women’s Ice Hockey team raised $1,124 at their Jan. 29 home game against St. Michael’s College to be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for The Cure.
The Susan G. Komen Foundation for The Cure, the global leader of the breast cancer movement, has invested nearly $1.5 billion in breast cancer research since inception in 1982. As the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists, the organization is working together to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures.
“A big thank you goes out to everyone involved,” said Sophie Leclerc, the team captain, citing fans, parents and her teammates. “To get that kind of support is great.”
The team raised money initially to purchase the pink jerseys they wore for the game. And a handmade quilt was raffled off with proceeds from that going to the night’s events. Lisa Del Dotto was the raffle winner.
Carol Stevens and Gail Mariano dropped the honorary first puck in front of a crowd of over 500, many of whom were dressed in pink.
The Cadets, who are in just their third season competing at the varsity level, were 8-1-1 overall and 7-1-1 in the ECAC East going into Friday’s game. They added another win to their stats Friday, beating St. Mike’s 6-0, keeping them at the top of the ECAC East standings.
Norwich will return to action on Friday, Feb. 5, when the Cadets travel to Newport, R.I., to face ECAC East rival Salve Regina at 7 p.m.
