NEWS RELEASE
NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Norwich University officials announced that Major General David E. Quantock, NU’80, the US Army Provost Marshal General and Commander of the US Army Criminal Investigation Command (CID), will be this year’s speaker for the May 12 commissioning ceremony.
Quantock is the 11th commander of CID since it was first established as a major command on Sept. 17, 1971, and the 14th Provost Marshal General (PMG) to hold the position since it was established in September 1941.
Quantock graduated from Norwich University in 1980 with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, and he holds three separate masters’ degrees in computer science, public administration and strategic studies. He began his career as a military police officer.
In 2004, then-Colonel Quantock commanded the 16th Military Police Brigade when it was called in to relieve the 800th Military Police Brigade at Abu Ghraib after infamous charges of inmate abuses by its members.
As the senior-most Provost Marshal position in the US Army, reporting to the Chief of Staff of the US Army, Quantock’s position brings all aspects of law enforcement in the US Army into a single office and also makes him commander of CID.
CID is a separate military investigative force within the US Army with investigative autonomy, which investigates felony crimes and serious violations of military law within the United States Army.
On Saturday, May 12, Quantock will address the next generation of citizen soldiers as the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps will commission approximately 115 students from four branches of the military in a joint services ceremony. The ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. in Shapiro Field House in which the new officers receive their second lieutenant or ensign bars and their first salutes.
On the following day, Sunday, May 13, approximately 400 seniors will graduate from Norwich in commencement exercises to be held at 10:30 a.m. in Shapiro Field House.
Norwich University is a diversified academic institution that educates traditional-age students and adults in a Corps of Cadets and as civilians. Norwich offers a broad selection of traditional and distance-learning programs culminating in Baccalaureate and Graduate Degrees. Norwich University was founded in 1819 by Captain Alden Partridge of the U.S. Army. Norwich University is the oldest private military college in the United States of America and the birthplace of our nation's Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC). www.norwich.edu

NEWS RELEASE
NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Norwich University officials announced that General Martin E. Dempsey, the 18th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will be this year’s speaker for the commencement exercises to be held on Sunday, May 13.
As the highest ranking military officer in the country, Dempsey serves as the principal military adviser to the President, the Secretary of Defense and the National Security Council.
Formerly the Army’s 37th Chief of Staff, Dempsey is a highly decorated military officer with a Master’s Degree in English from Duke University who was once assigned to the English Department at the US Military Academy at West Point, his alma mater.
Officials at Norwich University are honored to welcome Dempsey, who will address both military and civilian students in the ceremony that marks their transition from students to professionals serving their country both on the battlefield and in business, government and their local communities.
Dempsey’s visit to Norwich is notable for its historical significance. The University was founded in 1819 by fellow West Point alum and former West Point Superintendent US Army Captain Alden Partridge upon the then radical principal of educating citizen soldiers.
That concept is a national institution today. In the past 10 years of The Global War on Terror the all-volunteer US military has relied heavily upon Reserve and Guard units, otherwise known as citizen soldiers.
Partridge’s Norwich model became the blueprint for the federal government to duplicate military training at land grant universities across the country in what we now know as the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC).
On Sunday, May 13, Dempsey will address the approximately 400 graduating Norwich students and their families in commencement exercises to be held at 10:30 a.m. in Shapiro Field House. Of the 400 graduating students, approximately half are civilian and half are graduating from the Corps of Cadets. Approximately 115 students will have commissioned into the US Armed Services through ROTC the day before.

NEWS RELEASE
NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Norwich University’s Department of Psychology and NU’s Army ROTC Program will host Brigadier General Rhonda Cornum, US Army, Ph.D., M.D., the Director of Comprehensive Soldier Fitness (CSF) for the Army, to discuss the US Army’s health program on Monday, Feb. 28 from 8-9:30 p.m. in Milano Ballroom, located in Crawford Hall.
According to the Army’s CSF website: “This effort began in 2008 under the leadership of Brig. Gen. Rhonda L. Cornum. CSF is a holistic program designed to give all members of the Army community the knowledge, thinking skills, and behaviors that will optimize the ability and likelihood to ‘thrive’ in their lives, as well as their ability to successfully cope with life's challenges and adversity.”
CSF is based on over 30 years of scientific study and results, uses individual assessments, tailored virtual training, classroom training and embedded resilience experts to provide the critical skills soldiers, family members and Army civilians need.
CSF marks a new era for the Army by comprehensively equipping and training soldiers, family members and Army civilians to maximize their potential and face the physical and psychological challenges of sustained operations.
According to the Army website: “We are committed to a true prevention model, aimed at the entire force, which will enhance resilience and coping skills enabling them to grow and thrive in today's Army.”
The program focuses on “improved Soldier performance and readiness,” and is designed to “build confidence to lead, courage to stand up for one's beliefs and compassion to help others.”
Earlier this month the Army announced its millionth soldier entering into the program by completing the "Global Assessment Tool" (GAT), an online survey which serves as an entry point into CSF and one of the four pillars of the program.
“BG Cornum is a highly decorated combat veteran who has served our nation since 1978. We are honored to host her and to do our part to spread awareness of this important effort,” said Colonel (US Army, Retired) Michael B. Kelley, vice president for student affairs and Commandant of Cadets. “Comprehensive Soldier Fitness has lessons for all of us as we work to build resiliency in ourselves, our families, and our university community.”
