Sullivan Museum celebrates opening of new exhibit on history of Russian School

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Norwich University’s Sullivan Museum and History Center will present “ Tol’ko Po Russky, Pozhaluista” (“Russian Only, Please”), a new exhibit opening this month that chronicles the history of the Russian School, which operated at Norwich University from 1968-2000.

An opening reception Lunch and Learn with free food and drinks will be held on Thursday, March 22, at 12 p.m. in the museum Rotunda with featured speaker Dr. Rochelle G. Ruthchild, Director of the Norwich University Russian School from 1988-1994.

This program is free and open to the public.

The Russian School was a fixture on the Northfield campus every summer from 1968 to 2000, where students spent seven weeks intensely studying the Russian language. In addition to classroom work, total immersion in the Russian language continued in extra-curricular activities such as Russian choir, folk dancing, theater performances, cooking and sports.

The Russian School drew internationally renowned Russian scholars and artists to campus, including the exiled writer Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. The exhibition considers the academic and cultural legacy of the Russian School and its place in the history of Norwich University.

Objects on view in the exhibition include Russian School photographs, Slavic Festival costumes and Russian Imperial badges. The exhibition will run through the Fall 2012 semester.

The Sullivan Museum and History Center is located on Norwich’s Northfield campus and is open Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information please call 802-485-2183.
