NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Officials at Norwich University’s School of Graduate and Continuing Studies (SGCS) announced the launch of the Master of Arts in History (MAH) online program with a concentration in American History to begin in December 2011.
The MAH focuses on increasing the student’s expertise in researching, analyzing, interpreting and synthesizing historical knowledge. Students use these concepts to analyze and debate major historical events and themes. The challenge posed to students is to find and use evidence to support new interpretations of significant events in the nation’s history.
The teaching faculty is comprised of PhD level subject matter experts and published historians in the field of American history.
The 36 credit hour program can be completed in as few as 18 months.
“Norwich University has a long and deep history of contributions to our nation, both in the military and civilian worlds,” said William Clements, dean and vice president of SGCS. “I am pleased that our new program will allow students to study American history in depth and more fully examine our national heritage, as well as afford the opportunity to appreciate how Norwich has evolved as part of that history.”

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Officials at Norwich University’s School of Graduate and Continuing Studies (SGCS) announced the award of two different grants that will support students in the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program.
Both grants are from the US Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration.
“These grants provide assistance to the MSN students who receive the direct benefit of financial support to help defray some of their educational costs,” said Director of Nursing Valerie McCarthy. “Norwich University is delighted this resource is available for students.”
The Advanced Education Nurse Traineeship award is a continuation of last year’s grant and provides $20,000 for a needs-based graduate student stipend. Last year this grant supported 13 students in the MSN program.
The National Faculty Loan Repayment Program will provide $153,000 towards repayment of student loans to those graduates that go into teaching upon graduation.
These federal nursing awards address the country’s need for a steady supply of qualified nurse leaders, according Rod Hicks, Ph.D, RN, director of the MSN Program.
“I am proud of our MSN students’ accomplishments and the role Norwich University has played in helping them to assume positions of leadership in federal, military, and civilian health settings,” he said.

Norwich University hosts graduate school residencies
NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The School of Graduate and Continuing Studies (SGCS) is hosting its annual Residency conference this week and again the week of June 20.
The first students arrived on campus Sunday to meet students and faculty; to present final projects and engage in academic debate.
Over the course of both weeklong residencies students will travel from 48 states and 16 countries to the Northfield campus.
This week’s conference will end on Friday, June 11 with commencement exercises in which 329 students will receive master’s degrees from these master’s programs: business administration; civil engineering; public and justice administration and information assurance and business continuity management.
Former Vermont Adjutant General and Norwich trustee Martha Rainville is this week’s commencement speaker.
The second week of conferences runs from Sunday, June 20-Friday, June 25 culminating in commencement exercises that Friday in which Pulitzer-prize winning author Rick Atkinson will deliver the address to 337 graduates from masters programs in: diplomacy; military history; nursing and organizational leadership.
Commencement exercises are held on Friday, June 11 and Friday, June 25 at 10 a.m. in Shapiro Field House.
