ADVISORY

Who: Vermont 5th-12th graders, winners of local competitions

What: The state’s ultimate science and math fair with the best 200 math, science, engineering and technology projects from 2,000 projects judged at local and regional competitions to compete for state and national awards totaling $14,000 in cash and travel prizes, $900,000 in scholarships to Vermont colleges and an opportunity to represent Vermont at the Annual International Science and Engineering Fair in San Jose, Calif. in May, and four other national competitions held in Houston, Illinois, Washington, D.C. and New York in the next several months

Where: Norwich University, Bartoletto Hall; awards ceremony in Dole Auditorium

When: Saturday, April 2, 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Why: "Our mission is to inspire and reward Vermont middle and high school students for high quality inquiry by providing free access to competitions for independent student research and services to Vermont teachers to improve inquiry education."

How: Approximately 150 judges, including scientists, post-secondary education faculty, dentists, physicians, nurses, military personnel and retirees, and other science related professionals from across Vermont will judge projects, with each submission reviewed separately by three different judges

NORTHFIELD, Vt.
– Norwich University will host its fourth annual Real CSI Symposium: A Cross-Disciplined Approach on Wednesday, March 23, 4-7 pm and Thursday, March 24, 8 am-2:30 pm, in Dole Auditorium.

Seven renowned experts in the field of crime scene investigation will present on topics including computer forensics, crime scene processing, digital media, child abuse investigations, WMD’s and forensic ondontology.

The symposium features Detective Inspector Anne Lawrence, a 28-year veteran with the Metropolitan Police Service in London who has been assigned to the Counter Terrorist Command Unit, New Scotland Yard since 2003. She will present on her work heading up an investigation team of terrorist detectives on Wednesday, March 23 from 5-7 p.m. She has played a significant role in the major terrorist investigations in the UK including the July 7, 2005 London bombings, called Operation Theseus.

“Real CSI Symposium is a great opportunity for Norwich students to learn how the advances in science and technology help to solve crimes in the real world,” said Natalia Blank, assistant professor of organic chemistry. “The multitude of lecture topics will allow students to see that the modern detective work is a collaborative effort of a variety of groups specializing in a particular area of investigation.”

NORTHFIELD, Vt. (March 15, 2011)
– Norwich University will hold its 16th annual Colby Military Writers’ Symposium March 30-April 1with five authors engaged in presentations and a panel discussion titled: “An Uncertain Future in Afghanistan: Assessing the Conflict Ten Years On.”

“As the United States prepares for its tenth year of military involvement in Afghanistan, questions remain as to what the future holds, what victory means, and the ever present concern over how it will end. Writers will discuss the American mission in Afghanistan, its impact on the international community, and what it means for American servicemen and women.”

The panel discussion will be held on Thursday, March 31 from 1-3 p.m. in Plumley Armory with authors Chris Coppola, Donna McAleer, Doug Stanton, Karl Marlantes (this year’s winner of the Colby award), and Jack Segal and moderated by best-selling author James Hornfischer.

Founded in 1996 by Carlo D´Este, W.E.B Griffin, and Ambassador William E. Colby, and renamed in the latter’s memory in 1997, the Colby Symposium has brought more than 50 top authors, historians, and filmmakers to Norwich University in Northfield, Vt., for a two-day residency to participate in open forums, lectures and other related functions.
